||Nice post; very helpful. One of the few posts on text prosnscieg in R that lays things out in an easily understood format.I'm wondering if you have any ideas on how to split a string into two part at the point where digits are first encountered. For example, I'd like to be able to split this sting in two : pp to6/29/2010 . So one entry would be pp to and the second would be the date 6/29/2010 . Note that the text in the front could be of variable length so you can't just instruct based on the character count.Probably strsplit or substr but I'm not sure how to say at the first digit encountered. Either way, thanks for the great post y

||Ali,I'm sure you are aware by now of the indexOf() method for Arrays, but just in case you or aonnye else who stumbles on this post like I did doesn't know about it, the native indexOf() method will do the exact same thing your getArrayIndex() function does, except that it returns -1 if the item is not found, which is better because you don't want to use 0 unless the first index is indeed the matching item.Here is your example condensed into 4 lines (though it could easily be just 2 lines) using indexOf() instead:var menus:Array = new Array( Front , Right , Back , Left , Top );var selected:String = Left ;var indexOf:int = menus.indexOf(selected);trace( Found selected item +selected+ at array index: +indexOf);

||Jadu, thanks for ponitsg. Your command to replace spaces with a tab helped me a lot in extracting data from a .mht file with a space in some of the cells in a table to indicate an empty cell, and some cells with two strings separated by a space. I could not import the .mht file into Excel 2007 for work. Now the job is done. Thanks again!
