Conservation & Restoration

People make better decisions when they have access to good information.  There are many conservation and restoration options available for landowners who own property with wetlands or riparian areas. Large scale projects can seem daunting if you don’t know about the many different options available. Technical and financial assistance is available for landowners interested in restoration projects, management assistance, or conservation easements.  Please see our Landowners' Guide to MT Wetlands and the links below for more information on the many resources available to assist landowners interested in conservation and/or restoration.

Restoration is essential to the future of Montana’s wetlands and riparian areas. More than half of the nation’s original wetlands have been lost to draining, filling, and other land use changes. In Montana that number is about 30%. Because only about 1% of Montana’s landscape is wetlands, ensuring that these acres are protected and working as they should is of great value to all residents. Benefits include wildlife habitat, flood storage, improved water quality, and aesthetic and recreational enjoyment
